Bevestigd: Amazon adapteert J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings

Amazon heeft vandaag bevestigd dat de geruchten kloppen en dat ze de televisierechten van The Lord of the Rings hebben verkregen, gebaseerd op het bekende fantasieboek door J.R.R. Tolkien. Amazon heeft een deal gesloten voor meerdere seizoenen. De serie wordt geproduceerd door Amazon Studios in samenwerking met het Tolkien Estate and Trust, HarperCollins en New Line Cinema, onderdeel van Warner Bros. Entertainment.

“The Lord of the Rings is a cultural phenomenon that has captured the imagination of generations of fans through literature and the big screen. We are honored to be working with the Tolkien Estate and Trust, HarperCollins and New Line on this exciting collaboration for television and are thrilled to be taking The Lord of the Rings fans on a new epic journey in Middle Earth.”

Matt Galsor, een woordvoerder voor Tolkien Estate and Trust en HarperCollins zei:

“We are delighted that Amazon, with its longstanding commitment to literature, is the home of the first-ever multi-season television series for The Lord of the Rings. Sharon and the team at Amazon Studios have exceptional ideas to bring to the screen previously unexplored stories based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s original writings.”

De televisieadaptatie verkent nieuwe verhaallijnen in Middle Earth, die voorafgaan aan J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Fellowship of the Ring. De deal omvat een potentiële extra spin-offreeks.

Dit nieuws komt slechts vier maanden nadat Warner Bros. en de Tolkien erfgenamen een $80 miljoen schikking hebben getroffen na een vijfjarige rechtszaak. In 2012 klaagden de erven het productiebedrijf aan, omdat ze ontzet waren over de handelswaar die de producenten van The Fellowship of the Ring (2001), The Two Towers (2002), The Return of the King (2003) alsook de prequel The Hobbit trilogie aanbieden.
