Michael Jackson’s Thriller 3D tijdens filmfestival Venetië in première

Michael Jackson’s Thriller 3D zal z’n première beleven tijdens het 74ste Venice Film Festival. Dat hebben de erven van de zanger laten weten aan Billboard. De 74e editie van het internationale filmfestival is dit jaar van 30 augustus tot en met 9 september. Tevens zal de bijbehorende documentaire The Making of Michael Jackson’s Thriller in Venetië worden vertoond.

John Landis, die in 1983 ook de originele, bijna veertien minuten durende clip regisseerde, werkte drie jaar in het geheim aan de nieuwe versie. Ook de zoon en dochter van Jackson, Prince en Paris, zouden nauw betrokken zijn bij het project. De film zal niet opnieuw gemonteerd zijn, maar Optimum Productions vroeg Landis om samen de 3D conversie te overzien op basis van de originele 35mm film negatieven uit Michael’s archieven. De audio, inclusief Michael’s muziek, Elmer Bernstein’s score en de geluidseffecten hebben een upgrade gekeken naar  5.7, 7.1 en Atmos standaards. Landis zei:

“I am so happy to have had the chance not only to restore but enhance Michael Jackson’s Thriller! We took full advantage of the remarkable advances in technology to add new dimensions to both the visual and the audio bringing it to a whole new level. Even though Thriller was shot traditionally, I was able to use the 3-D creatively. Let me just warn you, there is a rather shocking surprise in there!”

John Branca en John McClain, co-executors van Michael Jackson Estate, zeiden:

“Michael Jackson made Thriller a rich theatrical experience: fun, funny, scary and wildly entertaining. No one before or since has made anything like it. Michael Jackson’s Thriller 3D is a modern day technical enhancement of his and John Landis’ original vision, and I think fans will love it.”

Jackson, die in 2009 overleed, bracht het nummer Thriller, van het gelijknamige album, in 1982 uit. In de videoclip is te zien hoe de zanger verandert in een zombie.
