Ron Howard over Robert Langdon’s terugkeer in Inferno

Het heeft jaren geduurd voordat er een nieuwe Dan Brown-verfilming kwam. De saga begon met The Da Vinci Code (2006) gevolgd door Angels en Demons (2009). Tussen laatstgenoemde en de nieuwe film Inferno zit zeven jaren. Regisseur Ron Howard legt tegenover Entertainment Weekly uit waarom dat zo is:

“None of us are under contract. We’re not cranking out a series. It’s about making a movie when we all believed and agreed we had something exciting, fun, and worthy to share.”

Howard vindt het verhaal van Inferno verfrissend, vooral dat Robert Langdon (Tom Hanks) aan geheugenverlies lijdt:

“This one felt fresh. It felt like a fun, fascinating performance opportunity for Tom …the fact that Langdon is part of the mystery and not just an observer. He’s really in the mix, that gives it a psychological thriller component that was never really in the DNA of the previous movies. The fact that the historical component that Dan Brown chose is Dante in hell give me, as a director, all kinds of vivid cool moments, images, sounds and cutting styles to deal with. So it was a really fun creative departure and undertaking for me, and for all of us.”

Waarom is er echter niet gekozen om het derde boek in de reeks te verfilmen, The Lost Symbol? Howard zei:

“The Lost Symbol is a terrific novel, and we tried to adapt it, but it never reached that point where we could all look at each other in the eye and say, you now, this is something progressive and interesting that we can do. I realize now that Dante was not only defining hell for Western civilization and Christianity, but he was inventing the horror genre because of all of his vivid descriptions of the punishments of the sinner. It’s everything you’ve seen repeated in every great shock moment in a cool horror film.”

Inferno is een film waarin de beroemde hoogleraar kunstgeschiedenis Robert Langdon (Tom Hanks), wakker wordt in een Italiaans ziekenhuis met geheugenverlies. Hij ontdekt dat hij in het bezit is van geheimzinnige codes, die gecreëerd zijn door een briljante wetenschapper die geobsedeerd is door het einde van de wereld en het duistere meesterwerk Inferno van Dante Alighieri. Als blijkt dat zijn leven in gevaar is, helpt de jonge dokter Sienna Brooks (Felicity Jones) hem te ontsnappen en de mysterieuze codes te ontcijferen. In een race tegen de klok proberen Langdon en Brooks samen het wereldbedreigende complot te stoppen.

Tom Hanks keert terug als Robert Langdon samen met een sterke cast bestaande uit Felicity Jones, Irfan Khan, Harry Sims, Omar Sy, Christoph Bruder en Sidse Babbet Knudsen. Ben Foster is gecast als de grote bad guy in de film.

De film is geregisseerd door Ron Howard. Het scenario is geschreven door David Koepp gebaseerd op het boek van Dan Brown. De uitvoerende producenten zijn Dan Brown, Anna Culp, Bill Connor en David Householter.

Inferno staat gepland voor 13 oktober 2016.
