Stephen Sondheim over Into The Woods

Componist Stephen Sondheim sprak recentelijk over Walt Disney Pictures‘ filmadaptatie van de Broadway musical Into the Woods. Toen hem gevraagd werd over de controversiële relatie tussen Little Red Riding Hood en the Wolf zei Sondheim:

“Well, you’ll be happy to know that Disney had the same objections. You will find in the movie that Rapunzel does not get killed, and the prince does not sleep with the [Baker’s Wife].”

Daarnaast sprak hij over het nummer “Any Moment,” welke plaatsvindt op het moment dat Cinderella’s Prince de Baker’s wife ontmoet:

“The song is cut. I’m sorry, I should say, it’s probably cut. We don’t want Rapunzel to die, so we replotted it. I won’t tell you what happens, but we wrote a new song to cover it.”

Sondheim sprak ook over filmadaptaties:

“If you look at most plays, it’s like the sonata form in music. If you screw around with that, you’re taking your life in your hands. There has to be a point at which you don’t compromise anymore, but that may mean that you won’t get anyone to sell your painting or perform your musical. You have to deal with reality.”

Into the Woods is een combinatie van de bekende sprookjes van Assepoester, Raponsje, Sjaak en de Bonenstaak en het verhaal van de Bakker en zijn vrouw die wanhopig naar een kind verlangen. Helaas zijn de Bakker en zijn vrouw door een heks vervloekt zodat ze geen kinderen kunnen krijgen. Ze moeten verschillende proeven doorstaan om de vloek op te heffen. Zo moeten ze de heks een koe bezorgen die zo wit als melk is, een kap die zo rood als bloed is, haar dat zo geel als maïs is en een muiltje dat zo zuiver als goud is.

Rob Marshall (Chicago, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides) regisseert de film, welke gebaseerd is op de Tony-winning musical door James Lapine en legendarische componist Stephen Sondheim. Into the Woods wordt geproduceerd door Marshall, John DeLuca, Marc Platt en Callum McDougall. De hoofdrollen worden gespeeld door Meryl Streep, James Corden, Emily Blunt, Johnny Depp, Anna Kendrick, Chris Pine, Billy Magnussen, Mackenzie Mauzy, Lucy Punch, Tammy Blanchard, Christine Baranski, Tracey Ullman, Lilla Crawford en Daniel Huttlestone. De film is vanaf 29 januari 2015 te zien in de Nederlandse bioscoop.
