Universal’s Doctor Dolittle reboot hertiteld als Dolittle

Universal Pictures heeft aangekondigd dat de eerder aangekondigde The Voyage of Doctor Dolittle nu simpelweg Dolittle heet. De filmadaptatie staat gepland om volgend jaar op 17 januari 2020 in première te gaan. De volledige synopsis is als volgt (via Vital Thrills):

“Robert Downey Jr. electrifies one of literature’s most enduring characters in a vivid reimagining of the classic tale of the man who could talk to animals: Dolittle.’

“After losing his wife seven years earlier, the eccentric Dr. John Dolittle (Downey), famed doctor and veterinarian of Queen Victoria’s England, hermits himself away behind the high walls of Dolittle Manor with only his menagerie of exotic animals for company. But when the young queen (Jessie Buckley, Wild Rose) falls gravely ill, a reluctant Dolittle is forced to set sail on an epic adventure to a mythical island in search of a cure, regaining his wit and courage as he crosses old adversaries and discovers wondrous creatures.’

“The doctor is joined on his quest by a young, self-appointed apprentice (Dunkirk’s Harry Collett) and a raucous coterie of animal friends, including an anxious gorilla (Oscar® winner Rami Malek), an enthusiastic but bird-brained duck (Oscar® winner Octavia Spencer), a bickering duo of a cynical ostrich (The Big Sick’s Kumail Nanjiani) and an upbeat polar bear (John Cena, Bumblebee) and a headstrong parrot (Oscar® winner Emma Thompson), who serves as Dolittle’s most trusted advisor and confidante.”

De hoofdrollen worden gespeel door Robert Downey Jr., Rami Malek, Octavia Spencer, Kumail Nanjiani, John Cena, Marion Cotillard, Carmen Ejogo, Craig Robinson, Frances de la Tour, Emma Thompson, Selena Gomez, Tom Holland, Ralph Fiennes, Antonio Banderas en Michael Sheen.

The Voyage of Doctor Dolittle wordt geregisseerd door Stephen Gaghan (Gold, Syriana). Gaghan herschreef het scenario van Tom Sheppard, wat op z’n beurt een adaptatie was van Hugh Lofting’s boek.

Dr. John Dolittle is een fictief personage uit een reeks kinderboeken geschreven door Hugh Lofting. Dolittle is een dokter met de unieke gave dat hij kan communiceren met dieren. Hij geeft dan ook de voorkeur aan het helpen van gewonde of zieke dieren dan menselijke patiënten. Het personage geldt tegenwoordig als een klassieker in de kinderliteratuur. De boeken zijn eerder gebruikt voor de dure musical flop Doctor Dolittle uit 1967 met in de hoofdrol Rex Harrison. Vervolgens was er de remake in 1998 met Eddie Murphy, welke losjes gebaseerd was op het materiaal. De nieuwe film wordt geregisseerd door Stephen Gaghan (Syriana, Gold) op basis van een scenario dat hij schreef.

Universal Pictures verwierf de rechten op The Voyage of Doctor Dolittle na een biedwedstrijd tussen verschillende studio’s. Joe Roth en Jeff Kirschenbaum produceren de film samen met Susan Downey.
