Emily Blunt over Julie Andrews’ reactie op Mary Poppins Returns

Het is al even bekend dat Emily Blunt de rol zal gaan spelen van Mary Poppins in Walt Disney Pictures‘s sequel Mary Poppin Returns. Tijdens een interview met Entertainment Weekly liet Blunt weten dat regisseur Rob Marshall (Into the Woods) persoonlijk heeft gesproken met haar voorganger Julie Andrews over de casting van Blunt. Blunt vertelde:

“Rob said he was in the Hamptons, and he saw [Andrews], and he said, ‘It’s top secret, but Emily Blunt’s playing Mary Poppins.’  And she went, ‘Oh, wonderful!’ I felt like I wanted to cry. It was lovely to get her stamp of approval. That took the edge off it, for sure.”

Er gaan geruchten dat Andrews en Dick Van Dyke (Bert uit het origineel) ook te zien zullen zijn in het vervolg. Blunt sprak met EW ook over het spelen van een iconische rol als die van Mary Poppins:

“I feel a little more trepidation with this [character] because she’s so emblematic of people’s nostalgia. It’s such an important character in people’s childhood. We’re delving into the books a lot more, which is a different version of the character, I’ll say that much. She’s a little meaner, yeah.”

Naast Blunt zijn er rollen voor Lin-Manuel Miranda, Meryl Streep en Ben Whishaw. De nieuwe Poppins film zal zich in de depressie afspelen in Londen, twintig jaar na de Disney klassieker Mary Poppins. De film zal materiaal gebruiken van P.L. Travers’ achtste Poppins boek.  Songwritingduo Marc Shaiman en Scott Wittman (Hairspray, Smash) zullen nieuwe muziek componeren, en David Magee (Finding Neverland, Life of Pi) zorgt voor het scenario. Disney en Marshall werken samen met het Travers estate en hebben de goedkeuring van Poppins’ co-composer Richard Sherman. De film zal te zien zijn vanaf 25 december 2018.
