Francis Ford Coppola hoopt van Megalopolis een jaarlijkse kijktraditie te maken

Regisseur Francis Ford Coppola probeert al 40 jaar zijn project Megalopolis van de grond te krijgen. De 120 miljoen dollar die de film waarschijnlijk gaat kosten betaalt de 82-jarige filmmaker grotendeels uit eigen zak. De film zal een sci-fi epos worden. In een nieuw interview met GQ vertelt Coppola nieuwe details over het project.

2022 is een speciaal jaar voor Francis Ford Coppola, omdat zijn geliefde klassieker The Godfather zijn 50ste jubileum viert. In het interview vertelt Coppola echter ook over de vloek die deze film op zijn carrière heeft achtergelaten, omdat dankzij het succes al zijn opeenvolgende films ermee vergeleken zouden worden. Nadat Coppola financieel succes boekte en verschillende prijzen won in de jaren 70 heeft hij zijn vroege succes nooit meer kunnen evenaren. In het verleden is hij zelfs failliet gegaan. Maar mede dankzij zijn wijnproductie heeft hij nu de financiële stabiliteit om zijn volgend project Megalopolis te financieren.

“It’s a love story.  A woman is divided between loyalties to two men. But not only two men. Each man comes with a philosophical principle. One is her father who raised her, who taught her Latin on his lap and is devoted to a much more classical view of society, the Marcus Aurelius kind of view. The other one, who is the lover, is the enemy of the father but is dedicated to a much more progressive ‘Let’s leap into the future, let’s leap over all of this garbage that has contaminated humanity for 10,000 years. Let’s find what we really are, which are an enlightened, friendly, joyous species.’ ”

Het verhaal van Megalopolis speelt zich af in een versie van New York met sterke parallellen met het oude Rome. Na een catastrofale ramp probeert een architect de stad te herbouwen volgens zijn utopische visie. Coppola schreef het script van Megalopolis in de vroege jaren 80. In 2001 stond hij op het punt om zijn film van de grond te krijgen, maar de productie werd stilgelegd dankzij de aanslagen van 11 september.

Coppola sprak verder over hoe moeilijk het tegenwoordig in Hollywood is om een origineel project van de grond te krijgen. Net als zijn collega Martin Scorsese is Coppola erg kritisch op hoe de huidige filmindustrie gedomineerd wordt door Marvel films.

“Now there are Marvel pictures. And what is a Marvel picture? A Marvel picture is one prototype movie that is made over and over and over and over and over again to look different. Even the talented people—you could take Dune, made by Denis Villeneuve, an extremely talented, gifted artist, and you could take No Time to Die, directed by…Gary? Cary Fukunaga—extremely gifted, talented, beautiful artists, and you could take both those movies, and you and I could go and pull the same sequence out of both of them and put them together. The same sequence where the cars all crash into each other. They all have that stuff in it, and they almost have to have it, if they’re going to justify their budget. And that’s the good films, and the talented filmmakers.”

Coppola hoopt dat zijn nieuwe film een ervaring wordt vergelijkbaar met It’s a Wonderful Life, een film die mensen voortaan als jaarlijkse traditie opnieuw zullen kijken.

“On New Year’s, instead of talking about the fact that you’re going to give up carbohydrates, I’d like this one question to be discussed, which is: Is the society we live in the only one available to us? And discuss it.”

Francis Ford Coppola zal Megalopolis regisseren. Volgens geruchten zal de productie dit jaar nog beginnen. De cast bevat namen als Oscar Isaac, James Caan, Zendaya, Cate Blanchett, Michelle Pfeiffer, Forest Whitaker, Jon Voight, en Jessica Lange.
