Het geheim achter Batman volgens Kevin Conroy

Welke acteur is de beste Batman? Is het Christian Bale of Michael Keaton? Ben je meer fan van Ben Affleck? Of ga je toch voor de klassieke rol van Adam West? Het is een discussiepunt dat je vaak terug hoort komen onder filmliefhebbers. Eén acteur die regelmatig over het hoofd wordt gezien is Kevin Conroy, de stemacteur die Batman al 24 jaar speelt. Na zo lang deze iconische superheld te hebben vertolkt (langer dan wel andere acteur ook) lijkt Conroy wel te weten wat nou het geheime ingrediënt is om een goede Batman te spelen. Hij vertelde het zojuist in een interview met IGN.

“Well, the key to playing Batman for me has been the fact the persona of the Bat — the character of the Bat, the putting on of the mask — is not the performance. The performance is Bruce Wayne. The real essence of the man is Batman. That’s when he’s his most comfortable; he’s at his most naked, most emotionally raw when he’s in the bat cave alone. When he goes out to Wayne Technologies. faces the world and puts on a suit — that’s the performance. Bruce Wayne is the performance element. That’s always been my key to the character, and I think when you play it that way it makes the Batman so authentic. It makes it less of an artifice. It just makes it ring true. So that it’s not just putting on this odd costume and pretending you’re someone you’re not.”

Opmerkelijk aan deze analyse is dat Batman meestal gezien wordt als de alter-ego van miljardair Bruce Wayne. Als je het aan Conroy vraagt is Batman zijn ware identiteit, terwijl Wayne het personage is dat hij richting de buitenwereld speelt.

Conroy debuteerde als Bruce Wayne in Batman: The Animated Series (1992 – 1995). De serie had veel invloed op de Batman franchise in het algemeen. Zo introduceerde deze show het personage Harley Quinn, die vorige week haar filmdebuut maakte in Suicide Squad. Conroys Batman verscheen in meerdere animatieseries, maar ook in de Arkham videospellen en deze zomer nog in de Blu-Ray film Batman: The Killing Joke.
