Netflix reageert op ophef over Mignonnes (Cuties)

De Franse film Mignonnes (Cuties) zorgde eerder al voor controverse. Nadat Netflix eerder de eerste trailer en de poster van de film online vrijgaf, werd een petitie gelanceerd om de film niet langer te vertonen. De poster zag namelijk schaars geklede tienermeisjes in suggestieve poses. Hoewel Netflix excuses had gemaakt, worden abonnees opgeroepen om hun account te verwijderen. Op 10 september waren de Twitter-hashtags #DeleteNetflix en #CancelNetflix zelfs trending.

In een reactie zegt een Netflix-woordvoerder dat Mignonnes juist een aanklacht is tegen het behandelen van jonge kinderen als lustobject. In een statement tegenover Variety zei Netflix:

“‘Cuties’ is a social commentary against the sexualization of young children. It’s an award-winning film and a powerful story about the pressure young girls face on social media and from society more generally growing up — and we’d encourage anyone who cares about these important issues to watch the movie.”

Regisseuse Maïmouna Doucouré won met de film de World Cinema Dramatic Directing Award won op het Sundance Film Fetival. Ze vertelde:

 “I realize that the people who have started this controversy haven’t yet seen the film. Netflix has apologized to the public and to myself. I’m hoping that these people will watch the movie now that it’s out. I’m eager to see their reaction when they realize that we’re both on the same side of this fight against young children’s hypersexualization.”

Het idee voor Mignonnes ontstond nadat Doucouré een buurtbijeenkomst in Parijs bijwoonde en getuige was van een groep jonge meisjes op een podium die “op een zeer seksueel onthullende manier” dansten, net als de personages in haar film. Doucouré zei:

“I decided to do research to see if they were aware and conscious of what they were doing. I met over a hundred preteens who told me their stories. I asked them how they felt about their femininity in today’s society. I wanted to know how they dealt with their self-image at a time when social media is so important, and they have access to so much information and so many images.”

Mignonnes op Netflix

Mignonnes is een Franse comedy-dramafilm voor tieners. De film gaat over een traditioneel Senegalese moslimmeisje dat wordt betrapt en verscheurd raken tussen twee contrasterende kanten, traditionele waarden en internetcultuur. De film ging in première in de World Cinema Dramatic Competition-sector van 2020 Sundance Film Festival op 23 januari 2020 en won de Directing Jury Award waarin het script van de film werd geprezen.

De hoofdrollen worden gespeeld door Fathia Youssouf, Médina El Aidi-Azouni, Maïmouna Gueye, Esther Gohourou, Ilanah Cami-Goursolas, Myriam Hamma, Mbissine Therese Diop, Demba Diaw, Mamadou Samaké.

De film is geschreven en geregisseerd door Maïmouna Doucouré. die haar speelfilmdebuut maakt.
