Oklahoma! serie in ontwikkeling door John Lee Hancock en Bekah Brunstetter

Deadline meldt dat de Broadway musical Oklahoma! wordt geadapteerd tot een tv-serie door John Lee Hancock (The Blind Side, The Highwaymen) en Bekah Brunstetter (This Is Us, American Gods). Ted Chapin, Chief Creative Officer van The Rodgers & Hammerstein Organization zei:

“Oklahoma!’s artistically revolutionary position in American culture has both kept it at the forefront of theatrical performances and allowed for various new innovations. This first-time ever television series will expand on the life of this remarkably resilient show.”

De serie speelt zich af in centraal Amerika en omvat muziek van het legendarische team Rodgers & Hammerstein, evenals nieuwe deuntjes die worden heruitgevonden voor een hedendaags publiek. De Broadway-productie is oorspronkelijk geschreven door Richard Rodgers en Oscar Hammerstein II. Gebaseerd op Lynn Riggs’ toneelstuk Green Grow the Lilacs uit 1931. Het verhaal speelt zich af in het boerenland buiten de stad Claremore, Indian Territory in 1906 en volgt boerderij-meisje Laurey Williams en haar twee rivaliserende aanbidders; cowboy Curly McLain en de sinistere Jud Fry.

De aankondiging volgt op Skydance Television’s (Jack Ryan) samenwerking met The Rodgers & Hammerstein Organization en muziekbedrijf Concord.
