George C. Romero’s Rise of the Living Dead in de maak

Filmmaker Cameron Romero is momenteel bezig met de zombiefilm Rise of the Living Dead. Het project is een prequel op Night of the Living Dead, gemaakt door zijn vader George A. Romero, die tevens wordt gezien als de uitvinder van het zombiegenre. Hij overleed eerder dit jaar. Rise of the Living Dead wordt volgens Cameron dan ook een eerbetoon aan zijn vader:

”Many of you know that I have been working to tell a story for many years, My dad read the script and called it ‘genius’. Many have approached me about making this film and I’ve said no to many because even though I’m not a ‘precious’ artist, this one is special… this one is mine… this one… is my love letter to my dad… to his work… to the fact that he was once called the most dangerous filmmaker alive… to the fact that society in 1968 wanted to shut him up as much as they wanted to celebrate him…”

Aldus Cameron. Hij is al sinds 2014 met het project bezig en heeft via crownfunding 30,000 dollar opgehaald om de film te kunnen financieren. Hij is zelf zeer enthousiast over het project, wat bleek toen hij het project aankondigde op Facebook:

“It is with absolute great joy that I would like to present to you all very late this Halloween night, the announcement for this project’s official title,” he wrote. “It is my absolute promise to you all that this film will be everything it needs to be… it will be unapologetic… it will be the… [Rise of the Living Dead]

Het verhaal speelt zich begin jaren 60 af. We volgen dokter Ryan Cartwright die als opdracht heeft gekregen om menselijk leven mogelijk te maken tijdens een nucleaire ramp. Dit zorgt ervoor dat hij een ultiem wapen voor de overheid creëert, wat echter een plaag zal zijn voor de mens. Meer informatie over het project is te vinden op de officiële Facebook-pagina en de bijbehorende groep.
