Dwayne Johnson heeft op Instagram foto’s onthuld van de set van Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw, waarin Hobbs ‘Samoaanse broers worden geïntroduceerd die gespeeld worden door Josh Mauga, Cliff Curtis, Roman Reigns en John Tui. Daarnaast meldt Deadline dat WWE kampioen Roman Reigns, aka Joe Anoa’i, een rol zal spelen in de spin-off. Bekijk de foto’s hieronder.
Johnson zei:
“In Samoa we have a word that means everything to us – AIGA – which means FAMILY, My name is Luke Hobbs and these are my four brothers. My family. My aiga. They all live in Western Samoa where they own and operate “Hobbs Customs” – a former illegal chop shop, now a legit business where they build and deliver vintage custom cars all over the world. In Samoa we have another saying which is “Ou te le tau to’atasi ae matou te tau fa’atasi” which means, When you fight one, you fight us ALL. Biggest showdown the Fast & Furious Universe has ever seen is coming this summer.”
De film volgt Dwayne Johnson’s agent Luke Hobbs en de huurmoordenaar Deckad Shaw (Jason Statham). De spin-off is voorzien van een script van Chris Morgan, die sinds Tokio Drift uit 2006 aan de franchise heeft gewerkt. Johnson’s Hobbs verscheen voor het eerst in Fast Five (2011) en is sindsdien in elke Fast & Furious-film verschenen. Statham’s Shaw maakte zijn debuut in een postcreditscène in Fast Six (2013) en diende als de belangrijkste antagonist van Furious 7. Tevens was hij te zien in The Fate of the Furious. De aankomende spin-off is een afzonderlijke film van de in ontwikkeling zijnde negende en tiende films in de serie. Fast & Furious 9 wordt op 10 april 2020 verwacht en Fast & Furious 10 als afsluiter van de serie op 2 april 2021.
Naast Johnson en Statham zijn er rollen voor Vanessa Kirby, Eiza Gonzalez, Eddie Marsan en Idris Elba. Deadpool 2 en Atomic Blonde regisseur David Leitch zal de film regisseren. Hobbs and Shaw draait vanaf augustus 2019 wereldwijd in de bioscopen.
