Eerste blik op nieuwe King Kong in Kong: Skull Island

Legendary en Warner Bros. Pictures hebben (via EW) een nieuwe foto vrijgegeven van Kong: Skull Island, waarop de nieuwe King Kong wordt onthuld. Deze kun je hieronder bekijken.

Daarnaast sprak regisseur Jordan Vogt-Roberts tegenover EW over het uiterlijk van het monster:

“With Kong, there’s been obviously so many different versions of him in the past and ours needed to feel unique to our film. I had a mandate that I wanted a kid to be able to doodle him on the back of a piece of homework and for his shapes to be simple and hopefully iconic enough that, like, a third grader could draw that shape and you would know what it is. A big part of our Kong was I wanted to make something that gave the impression that he was a lonely God, he was a morose figure, lumbering around this island.”

Vogt-Roberts sprak ook nog over het merendeel van de monster-films die hun monster pas laat in de film onthullen:

“We’re also fundamentally not playing the same game that Gareth Edwards’ Godzilla did and most monster movies do, which I’m sort of sick of the notion that a monster movie needs to wait an hour or 40 minutes until the creature shows up. Kong traditionally does not show up in these movies until very, very late, and the monster traditionally does not show up until very, very late in a monster movie, so a lot of these movies tend to have this structure that’s a bit of a slow burn. Something about this movie made me want to reject that and play a very, very different game.”

Kong: Skull Island

De jaren 70. Een gevarieerde groep ontdekkingsreizigers is bij elkaar gekomen om samen naar een nooit eerder ontdekt eiland, gelegen aan de Grote Oceaan en even mooi als verraderlijk, te reizen. Wat ze niet weten is dat ze zich in het domein van de mythische Kong bevinden.

Kong: Skull Island is de start van een nieuwe ‘Kaiju’-trilogie. Kaiju betekend in het Japans vreemd beest of mysterieus wezen. In Hollywood wordt met de term verwezen naar de Japanse filmmonsters, zoals King Kong, Godzilla, Mechagodzilla. De trilogie zal bestaan uit Skull Island, Gareth Edwards‘ Godzilla 2 (2018) en de grote finale Godzilla vs. Kong (2020). Opvallend genoeg zou Edwards’ Godzilla uit 2014 dan tevens onderdeel van de franchise moeten zijn, waardoor het dan zou gaan om een quadrologie.

De opnames van Kong: Skull Island zijn in volle gang in Hawaii. De film wordt geregisseerd door Jordan Vogt-Roberts gebaseerd op een scenario door Dan Gilroy, Max Borenstein en Derek Connolly. Hoofdrollen zijn er voor Brie Larson, Tom Hiddleston, Samuel L. Jackson, Shea Wigham, Jason Mitchell, Corey Hawkins, John Goodman,

Kong: Skull Island draait vanaf 9 maart 2017 in de bioscopen.
