Doctor Who vanaf 2023 te zien op Disney Plus

Er is bevestigd dat Disney Plus de exclusieve thuisbasis zal worden voor nieuwe seizoenen van Doctor Who. Na de recente première van Jodie Whittakers laatste Doctor Who special, heeft BBC officieel haar samenwerking aangekondigd met Disney Branded Television voor de internationale streamingrechten voor de komende seizoenen van de iconische sci-fi-serie.

De aankondiging kwam ook samen met de release van het gloednieuwe logo van de serie, die je hieronder kunt bekijken.

Doctor Who op Disney Plus

Als onderdeel van het 60-jarig jubileum van de show, gaan de nieuwe afleveringen vanaf november 2023 in première op de BBC en Disney Plus. Onlangs is onthuld dat Doctor Who oudgediende David Tennant terugkeert voor drie nieuwe speciale afleveringen als de veertiende dokter. Daarna zal Ncuti Gatwa officieel de rol van de vijftiende dokter van de serie overnemen.

Showrunner Russell T. Davies zei in een verklaring:

“I love this show, and this is the best of both worlds — with the vision and joy of the BBC and Disney+ together we can launch the TARDIS all around the planet, reaching a new generation of fans while keeping our traditional home firmly on the BBC in the UK.”

BBC’s Chief Content Officer Charlotte Moore voegde toe:

“We are thrilled to announce this exciting global partnership with Disney who are the perfect partners to bring this very British show to the rest of the world. Russell T Davies’ vision for Doctor Who has always been out of this world and we are committed to ensuring that audiences across the globe get the opportunity to enjoy the Doctor’s epic adventures with the scale and ambition that they deserve. Joining forces with Disney will elevate the show to even greater heights and reach new audiences so it’s an extremely exciting time for fans in the UK and across the world.”

Het komende veertiende seizoen van Doctor Who, dat afkomstig is van showrunner Russell T. Davies, wordt Gatwa’s eerste grote tv-project als hoofdrolspeler. Hij wordt officieel de allereerste zwarte acteur die het iconische personage in de geschiedenis van de franchise vertolkt. De show wordt geproduceerd in Wales door Bad Wolf met BBC Studios Production.

Doctor Who seizoen 13 is geschreven en geproduceerd door Chris Chibnall, die ook dienst doet als showrunner. Er wordt ook verwacht dat hij de serie samen met Whitaker verlaat na seizoen 13 en de drie 2022-specials. Daarna wordt hij opgevolgd door terugkerend uitvoerend producent en showrunner Russell T. Davies.
