Documentaire over leven en ‘mysterieuze’ dood van Brittany Murphy

Het leven en de dood van Brittany Murphy zullen worden verkend in een nieuwe, tweedelige docuserie die naar HBO Max komt. Dit heeft de streamingdienst bekend gemaakt.

Murphy stierf in december 2009 op 32-jarige leeftijd aan longontsteking en gecombineerde drugsvergiftiging. Haar echtgenoot Simon Monjack stierf minder dan een jaar later aan dezelfde oorzaak, wat leidde tot speculaties over de omstandigheden van Murphy’s dood, hoewel haar overlijden officieel als een ongeluk werd beschouwd.

De Clueless-actrice werd beroemd met verschillende veelgeprezen rollen in de jaren ’90 en begin 2000, met titels als Girl, Interrupted, 8 Mile, en King of the Hill.

Volgens een persbericht is de docuseries, “an in-depth, intimate character portrait, featuring new interviews with those close to Murphy, new archival footage, and delve into the mysterious circumstances around her death.” Private Violence-filmmaker Cynthia Hill zal de serie regisseren. Ze zei:

“I agreed to do this film because I think it’s a shame that Brittany’s promising life and career has been eclipsed by the circumstances of her death. I think it’s important to celebrate Brittany’s talent as we struggle to explain the tragic circumstances of her and Simon’s deaths.”

Jennifer O’Connell, executive vice president, Non-Fiction and Live-Action Family Programming bij HBO Max, vertelde:

“Our Brittany Murphy documentary cuts through the tabloid noise with an elevated, nuanced depiction of a sensational story. Crafting a grounded account of Brittany Murphy’s life struggles and sudden passing comes with great responsibility and we’ve partnered with a masterful creative team to produce a thoughtful examination of a tragedy that has long been cause for speculation.”

Er is nog geen releasedatum voor de serie vastgezet.

De verdachte details rond haar dood werden vorig jaar eerder onderzocht in de Investigation Discovery-documentaire Brittany Murphy: An ID Mystery en in de controversiële Lifetime-film The Brittany Murphy Story, die door de vader van actrice werd afgekeurd.
