Game of Thrones showrunners over de toekomst

In een interview gingen David Benioff en D.B. Weiss, de showrunners van de HBO-serie Game of Thrones in op de toekomst van de serie. Benioff zei:

“We see the light at the end of the tunnel. We still have a long way to go and things to figure out, but we definitely know where we’re heading and the major end-beats.”

Michael Lombardo, de programming president van HBO liet weten:

“This is the hard part of what we do. We started this journey with David and Dan. It’s their vision. Would I love the show to go 10 years as both a fan and a network executive? Absolutely.”

Mochten de showrunners willen stoppen na het zevende seizoen en HBO niet, dan gaan ze om tafel zitten:

“We’ll have an honest conversation that explores all possible avenues. If they weren’t comfortable going beyond seven seasons, I trust them implicitly and trust that’s the right decision—as horrifying as that is to me. What I’m not going to do is have a show continue past where the creators believe where they feel they’ve finished with the story.”

Dan is er nog het idee van de film. Zelfs schrijver George R.R. Martin wil dat de serie eindigt met een film, maar Lombardo twijfelt:

“Certainly there have been conversations where it’s been said, ‘Wouldn’t it be cool to do that?’. But when you start a series with our subscribers, the promise is that for your HBO fee that we’re going to take you to the end of this. I feel that on some level [a movie would be] changing the rules: Now you have to pay $16 to see how your show ends.”

Voorlopig is echter één ding duidelijk. Weiss en Benioff willen dat Game of Thrones zo sterk mogelijk eindigt:

“We want to go out on our absolute highest note. We don’t want people to finally see the end and say, ‘Thank god that’s over.’ We know basically how many hours are left in this story. We don’t want to add 10 hours to that. It’s about finding that sweet spot so it works for us and for HBO and, most of all, it works for the audience.”

In seizoen 5 proberen de diverse sleutelfiguren uit Westeros en Essos het ontstane machtsvacuüm te vullen. In Castle Black kost het Jon Snow moeite de eisen van de Night’s Watch in lijn te brengen met die van nieuweling Stannis Baratheon, die zichzelf benoemt tot wettige Koning van Westeros. Intussen maken de Tyrells en een religieuze groepering onder leiding van de raadselachtige High Sparrow het Cersei lastig om het gezag over King’s Landing te behouden en vertrekt Jaime op een geheime missie. Voorbij de Narrow Sea is Arya op zoek naar een oude vriend, terwijl de voortvluchtige Tyrion een nieuwe zaak vindt om voor te strijden. Wanneer het gevaar oploopt in Meereen merkt Daenerys Targaryan dat ze in ruil voor haar geringe macht over de stad meedogenloze offers moet maken.

De bedenkers van de serie David Benioff en D.B. Weiss keren terug als uitvoerend producenten en showrunners voor seizoen 5, welke vooral gebaseerd zal zijn op het vierde en vijfde boek uit George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire boekenreeks.

Game of Thrones seizoen 5 zal te zien zijn vanaf 12 april op HBO.
