George R.R. Martin over problemen Game of Thrones

Onlangs vertelden de Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff en D.B. Weiss dat ze de serie na zeven of acht seizoenen willen laten aflopen. Schrijver van de boeken George R.R. Martin weet niet hoeveel tijd de zender HBO nodig zal hebben om zijn boeken naar de gelijknamige televisieserie te vertalen. In een interview ging Martin in op de mogelijke problemen voor Game of Thrones die kunnen ontstaan naar aanleiding van zijn schrijfritme:

“I’m hopeful that I can not let them catch up with me. The season that’s about to debut covers the second half of the third book. The third book [A Storm of Swords] was so long that it had to be split into two. But there are two more books beyond that, and A Dance With Dragons. A Dance With Dragons is itself a book that’s as big as A Storm of Swords. So there’s potentially three more seasons there, between Feast and Dance, if they split into two the way the did [with Swords]. Now, Feast and Dance take place simultaneously. So you can’t do Feast and then Dance the way I did. You can combine them and do it chronologically. And it’s my hope that they’ll do it that way and then, long before they catch up with me, I’ll have published The Winds of Winter, which’ll give me another couple years. It might be tight on the last book, A Dream of Spring, as they juggernaut forward.”

Daarnaast gaf Martin aan dat er mogelijk films gemaakt moeten worden om het verhaal passend af te sluiten:

“It all depends on how long the main series runs. Do we run for seven years? Do we run for eight? Do we run for 10? The books get bigger and bigger (in scope). It might need a feature to tie things up, something with a feature budget, like $100 million for two hours. Those dragons get real big, you know.”

Verder wordt er overwogen om de prequelboeken, Tales of Dunk and Egg, die zich negentig jaar voor de gebeurtenissen in Game of Thrones afspelen, te verfilmen.

Terwijl de Lannisters worstelen om hun eigen ego’s te overwinnen en het gezag over de Iron Throne te behouden, dreigt er voortdurend gevaar van buitenaf. Stannis Baratheon bouwt zijn leger weer op bij Dragonstone; de Night’s Watch lijkt het af te leggen tegen het optrekkende leger van Mance Rayder; en Daenerys Targaryen staat met een drietal draken op het punt om de Iron Throne te heroveren.

Game of Thrones is een razend populaire fantasyserie op HBO die in 2011 van start ging. De serie heeft als showrunners David Benioff en D.B. Weiss. De reeks is gebaseerd op de A Song of Ice and Fire boeken van George R.R. Martin, die zelf ook een aantal seizoenen bij de serie betrokken was.
