HBO Max en Discovery Plus worden gecombineerd tot één platform

Het toekomstige mediabedrijf Warner Bros. Discovery gaat HBO Max en Discovery Plus aanbieden in één platform. Dit meldt Variety. 

Discovery staat op het punt om Warner Bros. Discovery te gaan heten, wanneer de fusie met WarnerMedia van AT&T wordt afgerond. Het heeft vandaag de plannen bevestigd om de huidige streamingdienst Discovery Plus en WarnerMedia’s HBO Max in één dienst te combineren, in plaats van de twee platforms aan te bieden.

Discovery CFO Gunnar Wiedenfels, die ook zal dienen als CFO van de nieuw gecombineerde Warner Bros. Discovery, zei maandag tijdens de 30e jaarlijkse Media, Internet & Telecom Conference van Deutsche Bank dat Discovery voorbereidingen treft om de twee streamers te combineren. Maar voordat ze worden gecombineerd, zegt Wiedenfels dat de eerste stap tijdens de integratie een vorm van bundeling zal zijn, terwijl het nieuwe bedrijf de beste manier zoekt om de twee platforms samen te voegen.

Wiedenfels vertelde:

“One of the most important items here is that we believe in a combined product as opposed to a bundle… We believe that the breadth and depth of this content offering is going to be a phenomenal consumer value proposition. The question is, in order to get to that point and do it in a way that’s actually a great user experience for our subscribers, that’s going to take some time. Again, that’s nothing that’s going to happen in weeks — hopefully not in years, but in several months — and we will start working on an interim solution in the meantime. So right out of the gate, we’re working on getting the bundling approach ready, maybe a single sign-on, maybe ingesting content into the other product, etc., so that we can start to get some benefits early on. But the main thrust is going to be harmonizing the technology platform. Building one very, very strong combined direct-to-consumer product and platform, that’s going to take a while.”

Gunnar gaf geen advies over hoeveel het gecombineerde streamingplatform consumenten zou gaan kosten, hoewel hij wel opmerkte dat Warner Bros. Discovery zowel advertentievrije als ad-lite-producten zal introduceren. Vooralsnog kosten HBO Max en discovery+ respectievelijk €6 en €4 per maand in Nederland. Wiedenfels zei:

“The direct-to-consumer business is obviously further along now than what we had four years ago. There’s a greater risk, you want to get that right. Between the two direct-to-consumer products, by the time we close, close to 100 million people are going to be affected as we make those changes. So that will need some very, very detailed and disciplined planning.”

De fusie tussen AT&T-afsplitsing WarnerMedia en Discovery Inc. werd halverwege 2021 aangekondigd met als hoofdreden de gezamenlijke focus op streamingservices.

HBO Max en Discovery Plus

Alles waar je van houdt op één plek. HBO Max verscheen op 8 maart 2022 in Nederland. HBO Max bevat series en films van onder andere Warner Bros. Max Originals, HBO, DC maar ook Cartoon Network. HBO maakte door de jaren verschillende populaire hitseries, onder andere The Wire, Game of Thrones, Band of Brothers, The Sopranos, Chernobyl. Binnenkort wordt de Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon en het vervolg op Sex and the City, And Just Like That… , aan het aanbod toegevoegd.

Ook diverse films zullen aan het aanbod van HBO Max Nederland worden toegevoegd; van de The Hobbit en The Lord of the Rings-trilogieën tot The Matrix, de The Dark Knight-films, tot de Harry Potter-franchise, Mad Max: Fury Road. Maar denk ook aan DC Films, zoals Wonder Woman 1984, Justice League, Green Lantern, Watchmen, Superman Returns. 

Daarnaast zullen ook recente Warer Bros.-films op de streamer verschijnen, zoals The Little Things, Godzilla vs. Kong, Judas and the Black Messiah, Tom & Jerry, Mortal Kombat, In The Heights, Space Jam: A New Legacy, The Suicide Squad, Reminiscence, Malignant, Dune, The Many Saints of Newark, King Richard, Cry Macho en The Matrix 4.

De streamer onderscheidt zich onder andere met het snel streamen van bioscoopfilm. De titels zijn vaak al 45 dagen na de bioscooppremière te kijken op HBO Max, zonder meerprijs. Concurrent Disney Plus biedt zijn bioscoopfilms vaak ook direct via streaming aan, maar rekent daar een meerprijs per film voor.
