Netflix kondigt nieuwe miniserie The Witcher: Blood Origin aan

Na het succesvolle debuut van The Witcher afgelopen december, heeft Netflix officieel aangekondigd dat ze werken aan de miniserie The Witcher: Blood Origin. Het gaat om een zesdelige actieserie en prequel op de populaire Netflix serie The Witcher.

Blood Origin vertelt een verhaal dat verloren is gegaan in de tijd en dat zich afspeelt in de elfenwereld, 1.200 jaar voor The Witcher. Blood Origin gaat over het ontstaan van de allereerste Witcher en de verschillende gebeurtenissen die leiden tot de samensmelting van de werelden van monsters, mensen en elfen.

Declan de Barra is showrunner van de serie die uitvoerend wordt geproduceerd door Declan de Barra & Lauren Schmidt Hissrich, Jason Brown & Sean Daniel van Hivemind, en Tomek Baginski & Jarek Sawko van Platige Films. De creatief adviseur voor de serie is Andrzej Sapkowski.

Declan de Barra vertelde:

“As a lifelong fan of fantasy, I am beyond excited to tell the story The Witcher: Blood Origin. A question has been burning in my mind ever since I first read The Witcher books – What was the Elven world really like before the cataclysmic arrival of the humans? I’ve always been fascinated by the rise and fall of civilizations, how science, discovery, and cult TV ure flourish right before that fall. How vast swathes of knowledge are lost forever in such a short time, often compounded by colonization and a rewriting of history. Leaving only fragments of a civiliztion’s true story behind.  The Witcher: Blood Origin will tell the tale of the Elven civilization before its fall, and most importantly reveal the forgotten history of the very first Witcher.”

Lauren Schmidt Hissrich voegde toe:

“I am so thrilled to collaborate with Declan and the Netflix team on The Witcher: Blood Origin. It’s an exciting challenge to explore and expand The Witcher universe created by Andrzej Sapkowski, and we can’t wait to introduce fans to new characters and an original story that will enrich our magical, mythical world even more.”

The Witcher, gebaseerd op de gelijknamige fantasy boeken, is een episch verhaal over familie en het lot. Geralt of Rivia, een eenzame monsterjager, probeert in een wereld waar de meeste mensen slechter zijn dan beesten, zijn plek te vinden. Het noodlot brengt hem bij een machtige magiër en een jonge prinses die een gevaarlijk geheim met zich meedraagt. De drie zijn aan elkaar overgeleverd om hun weg door het onheilspellende ‘Continent’ te vinden.

De cast bestaat uit hoofdrolspeler Henry Cavill (Mission Impossible – Fallout, Justice League), die de rol speelt van Geralt of Rivia. De andere hoofdrollen zijn voor Anya Cholatra (The ABC Murders, Wanderlust) als Yennefer en Freya Allan (The War of the Worlds, Into The Badlands) als Ciri. De overige cast bestaat uit Jodhi May (Game of Thrones, Genius) als Calanthe, Björn Hlynur Haraldsson (Fortitude) als Eist, Adam Levy (Knightfall, Snatch) als Mousesack, MyAnna Buring (Ripper Street, Kill List) als Tissaia, Mimi Ndiweni (Black Earth Rising) als Fringilla, Therica Wilson-Read (Profile) als Sabrina, Emma Appleton (The End of The F**king World) als Renfri, Eamon Farren (The ABC Murders, Twin Peaks) als Cahir, Joey Batey (Knightfall, Strike) als Jaskier, Lars Mikkelsen (House of Cards, Sherlock) als Stregobor, Royce Pierreson (Wanderlust, Judy) als Istredd, Maciej Musiał (1983) als Sir Lazlo, Wilson Radjou-Pujalte (Jamillah & Aladdin, Dickensian) als Dara en Anna Shaffer (Harry Potter) als Triss.
