Netflix werkt aan serie The Empress over keizerin Sisi

De Duitse schrijfster Katharina Eyssen werkt momenteel aan een nieuwe Netflix serie The Empress, over Elisabeth van Oostenrijk (1837-1898), die wereldwijd bekend werd als keizerin Sisi. Met in de hoofdrollen voor het keizerlijke paar Devrim Lignau en Phillip Froissant. De serie wordt verwacht in het voorjaar van 2022.

Sissi serie The Empress op Netflix

Netflix komt met een nieuwe zesdelige Duitse original serie The Empress van schrijfster, showrunner Katharina Eyssen (Holliday Secrets). Een serie over de iconische Keizerin van Oostenrijk-Hongarije. Met in de hoofdrollen voor het keizerlijke paar Devrim Lignau (Auerhaus) en Phillip Froissant (Black Island). Katrin Gebbe en Florian Cossen zullen de regie in handen nemen.

Berlin, Munich een dag is augustus 1853 twee jonge mensen hebben een ontmoeting met het spreekwoordelijke liefde op het eerste gezicht. Hij is keizer Franz Joseph van Oostenrijk-Hongarije zij is Elisabeth von Wittelsbach princes van Beieren en de zus van de vrouw waar Franz mee gaat trouwen. Het aangrijpende levensverhaal van keizerin Elisabeth beter bekend als Sisi!

Showrunner Katharina Eyssen zei:

“THE EMPRESS offers us the chance to tell the moving story of Empress Elisabeth for a contemporary audience. According to a modern image of women. Devrim is not only a highly talented, multi-faceted actress, but for me embodies this very woman: intelligent, passionate, rebellious. Philip Froissant, for his part, will make of the role of Franz Joseph something we have not seen before: An ambivalent and fascinating ruler whose conflicts are more topical than ever.”

De 6 afleveringen richten zich op de eerste maanden na Sisi’s aankomst aan het Weense hof. Het is het grote liefdesverhaal tussen Elisabeth en Franz dat centraal staat in het verhaal. Elisabeth wordt gezien als een jonge vrouw die haar tijd vooruit is, in opstand tegen de rigide regels van de 19e eeuw en de rechtbank. Ze ontmoet Franz, die een belangrijke rol speelde bij het vormgeven van de moderne Europese geschiedenis. Met jaloezie, intriges en machtsstrijd achter de schermen van het Habsburgse hof en de opkomende kwestie van vrijheid van het volk.
