Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City verschijnt september

Sony Pictures en Screen Gems hebben eindelijk de titel aangekondigd voor de aanstaande Resident Evil-reboot van regisseur Johannes Roberts (47 Meters Down). De officiële titel is Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City. De hoofdrollen zijn voor Kaya Scodelario en Robbie Amell. De film zal de eerste twee originele Resident Evil-games adapteren en zal op 3 september in de bioscoop verschijnen.

De titel werd eigenlijk voor het eerst onthuld door Roberts tijdens een recent interview met IGN, waar hij nieuwe details bevestigde over de nieuwste verfilming van de populaire videogameserie inclusief filminspiraties. Hij sprak over de engere en donkere sfeer van de reboot:

“The big thing for this movie is tone. The thing I loved about the games is they were just scary as hell and that is very much what I wanted to. That atmosphere — it’s rain, it’s constantly dark, it’s creepy. Raccoon City is kind of this rotten character in the movie and that sort of atmosphere in the games I wanted to put in [the film].”

Hij voegde toe:

“We have two very separate locations but we split people off into their worlds. One is more of a siege movie style with the police station, and then you have the mansion which is creepy as f*ck.”

Roberts noemde ook John Carpenter als zijn belangrijkste inspiratiebron voor Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City, daarbij verwijzend naar Carpenter’s Assault on Precinct 13 en The Fog als de twee films die hem hielpen de hele sfeer van de film te creëren. Hij zei:

“I’m a huge John Carpenter fan and I really took to that. The way he tells these claustrophobic siege movies and I took movies like Assault on Precinct 13 and The Fog and these disparate group of characters coming together under siege, and I took that as my filmic inspiration.”

Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City

Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City wordt een officieel oorsprongsverhaal van Capcoms langlopende survival horror-videogamefranchise en speelt zich af op de beruchte avond in Raccoon City in 1998, toen de Umbrella Corporation de wereld in de war bracht en het aan een selecte groep was om ze te stoppen.

De film wordt geproduceerd door Robert Kulzer voor Constantin Films, die verbonden was aan de franchise met Milla Jovovich, samen met James Harris van Tea Shop Productions en Hartley Gorenstein, terwijl Constantins CEO Martin Moskowicz en Davis Film’s Victor Hadida de uitvoerende producenten zullen zijn. Screen Gems van Sony Pictures, die de originele films heeft gedistribueerd, zal de film in eigen land uitbrengen, terwijl Constantin de film debuteert in Duitstalige gebieden, Elevation in Canada, Metropolitan in Frankrijk en Sony Pictures Releasing in alle resterende gebieden.

De hoofdrollen worden gespeeld door Kaya Scodelario (The Maze Runner), Robbie Amell (Upload) en Hannah John-Kamen (Ant-Man and the Wasp). Scodelairo is gecast als Claire Redfield, terwijl John-Kamen de rol van Jill Valentine speelt en Amell is te zien als Chris Redfield. Daarnaast zijn er rollen voor Tom Hopper als Albert Wesker, Avan Jogia als Leon S. Kennedy en Neal McDonough als William Birkin.

De film is geregisseerd door Johannes Roberts (47 Meters Down) op basis van een scenario dat hij samen met Greg Russo schreef.

Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City draait vanaf 3 september in de bioscoop.
