The Rocky Horror Picture Show remake wordt anders dan de film

FOX heeft een trailer vrijgegeven van The Rocky Horror Picture Show remake. In 1975 werd de gelijknamige musical film uitgebracht, met in de hoofdrol Tim Curry als transseksuele, buitenaardse onderzoeker Dr. Frank-N-Furter. De film is wereldwijd bekend en werd door de jaren heen geadapteerd als toneelstuk en musical. De nieuwe tv-versie wordt een 2 uur durende tv-special, welke komende herfst te zien zal zijn op de zender. Uitvoerend producent, regisseur en choreograaf Kenny Ortega zei:

“When we first embarked on developing this re-imagining, the very first thing laid out was we wanted to celebrate the fans with this new departure. We wanted to bring in a cast that didn’t have to fill in anyone’s shoes. The celebration of the fandom, the 40 years, the midnight screenings, the adoration, it was really important we had that aspect as a character to the piece. We invited Sal Piro to join us, President Emeritus of Rocky Horror Picture Show Fan Club worldwide. Tim Curry of course joined us right from the start and opened up a dialogue. When we filled the theater with fans, we tried many things. What we wanted to make sure was the callbacks didn’t get in the way of telling the story, but celebrated the way of telling a story. It was trial and error. We found a way to balance the callbacks into the arc of our full story.”

Hoewel er al lange tijd script circuleerde tussen fans, is er nog nooit eentje officieel door 20th Century Fox vrijgegeven. Lou Adler, producent van de originele theaterproductie en film, is bij dit project betrokken als uitvoerend producent. Hij zei hierover:

“The callbacks are natural. You can’t write them. As in the first one, it’s a space that was not left for a callback. Something in the dialogue or the visual just prompted the audience to either put on a hat when someone on the screen put on a hat, or make a comment. It’s just a natural sort of thing. You don’t write them, as we never did for the original. My son Cisco Adler produced the soundtrack,” Adler said. “What Kenny and I said was, ‘Be true to the original but make it contemporary.’ There’s loops and samples but it’s still the original music.”

Curry zat ook in het panel en gaf officieel zijn goedkeuring aan de remake:

“It was fun to do it again. I actually offered myself as Dr. Scott because I was already in a wheelchair. They thought the narrator was a better fit and I enjoyed it a lot.”

The Rocky Horror Picture Show remake

In The Rocky Horror Picture Show strand het net getrouwde stel Brad en Janet met autoproblemen in een afgelegen gebied. Ze komen bij het bizarre optrekje van Dr. Frank-N-Furter terecht, een transseksuele, buitenaardse geobsedeerde onderzoeker. Deze houdt op dat moment zijn jaarlijkse Transsylvaanse onderzoeksbijeenkomst om de geboorte van Rocky Horror te vieren, een goed uitziende mannelijke creatie die aan alle wensen van Frank-N-Furter moet voldoen.

Emmy Award winnaar en de originele Dr. Frank-N-Furter, Tim Curry, zal terugkeren naar de wereld welke hij bekend heeft gemaakt als de Criminologist Narrator (gespeeld door Charles Gray in de originele film) in The Rocky Horror Picture Show tv-remake ter gelegenheid van het 40 jarige bestaan.

Naast Curry bestaat de cast uit Laverne Cox, Victoria Justice, Ryan McCartan, Adam Lambert, Reeve Carney, Staz Nair, Annaleigh Ashford en Christina Milian.

De originele The Rocky Horror Picture Show is een film van Jim Sharman met in de hoofdrollen Tim Curry, Barry Bostwick en Susan Sarandon. Het is een musical-horror-komedie en een parodie op de B-films uit de jaren 1940-1970. Het scenario van de film is gebaseerd op de The Rocky Horror Show, geschreven door Richard O’Brien. Na de premiere in de bioscopen in 1975 deed de film aanvankelijk niets en werd teruggetrokken uit de meeste bioscopen. In 1976 liet Fox de film draaien in middernachtvoorstellingen. Dit was een groot succes en heeft de film een cultstatus gekregen.
