Seizoen 8 laatste voor Game of Thrones

Eerder dit jaar werd het zesde seizoen van HBO‘s Game of Thrones. In de tussentijd is er al veel gesproken over het volgende seizoen. Zo lieten showrunners David Benioff en D.B. Weiss weten dat de opnames van het zeven afleveringen tellende 7de seizoen pas later beginnen dan gebruikelijk. Nu heeft HBO aangekondigd dat de fantasyserie zal worden afgerond met het achtste seizoen. Tijdens de Television Critics Association heeft Casey Bloys, de nieuwe programmabaas van HBO, bevestigd dat het achtste seizoen de laatste zal zijn:

“Yes, they have a very specific plan about the number of seasons they want to do. Believe me, as the new [programming executive] coming in, if I could get them to do more. I would take 10 more seasons. But we take their lead on what they think they can do the best version of the show.”

Bloys werd tevens gevraagd naar een mogelijke Game of Thrones spin-off serie:

“We’ve talked about it, it’s something I’m not opposed to, but of course it has to make sense creatively. I’m not sure that the guys could really wrap their heads around it when they’re just about to start production. It’s a pretty intense production, they’re about to start production soon. I’m open to it. The guys weren’t opposed to it, but there’s no concrete plans for it at this point.”

Game of Thrones seizoen 7 is vanaf 16 juli te zien op HBO. Het zevende seizoen is korter dan gebruikelijk en telt slechts zeven afleveringen.

Negen nobele families strijden voor de macht over het koninkrijk Westeros en de strijd tegen een vergeten kwaad wat na duizenden jaren is teruggekeerd. In seizoen zeven zal Cersei alles op alles moeten zetten om Lannisters op de troon te houden. Daenerys zet daarnaast haar eerste stappen op vaste grond in Westeros om vervolgens de strijd aan te gaan voor totale heerschappij van het koninkrijk. Ten slotte zal de nieuwe King of the North John Snow iedereen om hem heen moeten verzamelen om de Night King en de White Walkers te weerstaan. Winter is Here.

De bedenkers van de serie David Benioff en D.B. Weiss keren terug als uitvoerend producenten en showrunners voor seizoen 7. De serie is gebaseerd op de A Song of Ice and Fire serie van George R.R. Martin.
