Trailer voor Studio Ghibli’s CG-animatiefilm Earwig and the Witch

De eerste trailer van Studio Ghibli‘s nieuwste animatiefilm en allereerste CG-film Earwig and the Witch (of Aya and the Witch) is eindelijk online verschenen via Twitter, met een nieuwe blik op Aya’s magische wereld. De film gaat in wereldpremière op 18 december in Japan en zal naar verwachting door GKIDS in de VS worden uitgebracht. Bekijk de video hieronder!

Earwig and the Witch trailer

Na bijna zes jaar sinds Studio Ghibli de animatiedramafilm When Marnie Was There in 2014 uitbracht, komt de bekroonde Japanse animatiestudio met de nieuwste animatiefilm getiteld Earwig and the Witch. Het project is afkomstig van Goro Miyazaki, de zoon van Spirited Away-regisseur Hayao Miyazaki, die ook wordt credits krijgt voor de planning van de film.

Earwig and the Witch is gebaseerd op de kinderroman uit 2011 getiteld Earwig and the Witch, die is geschreven door de Britse auteur Diana Wynne Jones, die ook de bronroman heeft geschreven voor Studio Ghibli’s populaire fantasiefilm Howl’s Moving Castle. De roman volgt het verhaal van een slim weesmeisje, Earwig genaamd, terwijl ze wordt geadopteerd door een vrouw genaamd Bella Yaga, die een wrede heks blijkt te zijn die haar meeneemt naar een spookhuis. De officiële synopsis van de roman luidt:

“In this enchanting introduction to Diana Wynne Jones’s magical and funny work, Earwig is a fearless young orphan. When she finds herself in a house of dark magic, she does whatever she can to adapt—especially if it means that she’ll learn a little magic herself! A young middle grade novel by World Fantasy Award for Lifetime Achievement‒winner Diana Wynne Jones, beautifully illustrated in black and white by Caldecott Medalist Paul O. Zelinsky.

Not every orphan would love living at St. Morwald’s Home for Children, but Earwig does. She gets whatever she wants, whenever she wants it, and it’s been that way since she was dropped on the orphanage doorstep as a baby. But all that changes the day Bella Yaga and the Mandrake come to St. Morwald’s, disguised as foster parents. Earwig is whisked off to their mysterious house full of invisible rooms, potions, and spell books, with magic around every corner. Most children would run in terror from a house like that . . . but not Earwig. Using her own cleverness—with a lot of help from a talking cat—she decides to show the witch who’s boss.”
