Een bron vertelde dat: “the BBC is desperate for a Sherlock Christmas Day special this year. It wants its biggest guns ready.”

Daarin keert Professor Moriarty (Andrew Scott) terug.

“Every fairytale needs a good old-fashioned villain. You need me, or you’re nothing. I think the horrible truth for poor Moriarty is Moriarty needed Sherlock far more than Sherlock needed Moriarty. If you look at what actually happens in “The Reichenbach Fall” — never mind what seems to happen; pay attention to what did happen — Sherlock Holmes tricks him ruthlessly. I mean, he completely outclasses Moriarty actually, because Moriarty is the mad one. I think what Moriarty provides for Sherlock Holmes is permission to be a hero. I think Sherlock is troubled — not anymore — but when he says to Mycroft, ‘Is there something wrong with us?’ I don’t think he’s troubled about whether or not he’s mad or evil. He meets Moriarty and thinks, ‘No, no, no. I’m not that. Whatever I am, I am not that.’ I don’t think he even needs to beat Moriarty.”

Moffat ging verder:

“It’s really [Season] 4 that we’ve got, but it throws forward to a terrifying [Season] 5. It wasn’t a planned thing. We had just got out of the rain and because we don’t have the lovely big trailers that Benedict and Martin have, we had to go sit in the accountancy department and we just talked about what we could do. We just started having what I think are the best set of ideas we’ve ever had. I think they’re just wild. And when I say ideas, it’s what stories we’ll tackle, what big twists there will be, what gut punches there will be, and what surprises there will be, and I think it’s really exciting.”
