Regisseur Jon M. Chu heeft zojuist aangekondigd dat de Wicked musical film in twee delen zal worden uitgebracht. De films worden met een tussenpoos van een jaar uitgebracht, te beginnen met de feestdagen van 2024. Lees de volledige aankondiging van Jon M. Chu hieronder.

“Thank you for all the support these past several months in anticipation of the WICKED movie. We have so many exciting things to share but for now l’m giving you one.. or two, rather. Here’s what happened: as we prepared this production over the last year, it became increasingly clear that it would be impossible to wrestle the story of WICKED into a single film without doing some real damage to it.

As we tried to cut songs or trim characters, those decisions began to feel like fatal compromises to the source material that has entertained us all for so many years. So we decided to give ourselves a bigger canvas and make not just one WICKED movie but TWO!! With more space, we can tell the story of WICKED as it was meant to be told while bringing even more depth and surprise to the journeys of these beloved characters.

Cynthia, Ariana, and I-and all of the cast and crew-pledge to create nothing less than an experience that honors its foundation for all the fans who’ve waited for this movie, and to offer a thrilling, fantastical world full of dynamic characters that invites in those who are untamiliar. So get ready, because WICKED is finally coming to you on successive Christmas holidays beginning December 2024. Until then, I will be keeping you up to date throughout rehearsals, the shoot, and even editing. Here. We. Go.”

Wicked musical film

Het verhaal gaat over de belevenissen van twee jonge heksen, Glinda en Elphaba, die respectievelijk de Goede Heks van het Noorden en de Valse Heks van het Westen zullen worden. Het verhaal vormt een ‘prequel’ op L. Frank Baum’s klassieker The Wizard of Oz.

Popster Ariana Grande en Emmy, Tony en Grammy Award-winnaar Cynthia Erivo zullen te zien zijn in de film. Erivo speelt Elphaba, terwijl Grande de rol van Glinda speelt.

Jon M. Chu zal de aankomende film regisseren. Chu regisseerde onlangs de veelgeprezen verfilming van In the Heights. Chu’s andere regiecredits zijn onder meer Crazy Rich Asians, Now You See Me 2 en Jem and the Holograms.

De Wicked film wordt op het scherm gebracht door producer Marc Platt (Into the Woods, Bridge of Spies). De driemaal Tony Award-winnende musical is een adaptatie van de bestseller-roman van Gregory Maguire, “Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West”. Het stuk is geschreven door Winnie Holzman (My So-Called Life) en drievoudig Oscar-winnende componist en tekstschrijver Stephen Schwartz (Godspell, Pippin), die ook samenwerken aan de aanpassing van het scenario.

Wicked wordt geproduceerd op Broadway door Platt, Universal Stage Productions, de Araca Group, Jon B. Platt en David Stone.

De opnames van de film staan momenteel gepland voor zomer 2022.
