Zorro serie in ontwikkeling bij Disney met in de hoofdrol Wilmer Valderrama
Volgens Variety zal Wilmer Valderrama schitteren als Don Diego de la Vega, beter bekend als Zorro, in een nieuwe serie die in ontwikkeling is bij Disney Branded Television. Deze nieuwe vertelling, is een heruitvinding van de Disney-ABC Zorro serie uit de jaren 50. Het zal de beruchte en geliefde gemaskerde burgerwacht naar het moderne publiek brengen.
Valderrama neemt de fakkel over van een lange reeks acteurs die het personage sinds de jaren twintig in zowel film als televisie hebben gespeeld. Waaronder Guy Williams, die Vega speelde in de jaren 50-serie, en Antonio Banderas, die de mantel op zich nam voor de meest recente filmadaptaties The Mask of Zorro en The Legend of Zorro.

President van Disney Branded Television, Ayo Davis, legt uit:
“We’re reimagining this Disney classic as a compelling period piece, set in Pueblo de Los Angeles, but told in a very modern telenovela style — with richly drawn contemporary characters and relationships set against the action, drama, suspense, and humor of the original, iconic Zorro. Wilmer shares our commitment to reflect the interesting and rich diversity of the human experience and we look forward to delivering a culturally relevant and entertaining story with definitional characters that will connect with our viewers for generations to come.”
Verder bewijs van Valderrama’s toewijding aan de rol is zijn titel als uitvoerend producent, naast Gary Marsh, de president en chief creative officer van Disney Branded Television. John Gertz van Zorro Productions Inc. zal ook uitvoerend produceren. Valderrama zei:
“Growing up, Zorro was the one character that made me, as a Latino, feel like I could be a hero. As an adult and a storyteller, I have a responsibility in the stories that I help bring to life. To partner with Gary and Disney to bring Zorro back into the family after 60 years and be a part of the legacy for other children to know they too can be the heroes of their own stories is a dream come true.”
Valderrama wordt vertegenwoordigd door UTA en Silver Lining Entertainment en is vooral bekend als de iconische Fez uit That 70s Show.
